Newest NYC Activities I’m addicted too:

I think I’ve figured out that my “special sauce” to life is community outside of my phone.

For instance, much of my existence is posted online somewhere, and all of my friends exist digitally, many of the newer friends I’ve made were actually met digitally. But, my realization is the special sauce that makes hanging out with me fun is that I bring people into new realms.

I love my community gym, my Saturday run clubs, book club, ect. because in all cases I see these people for specific moments in time with a shared interest. But the interest is so niche that beyond our topical subject I get to meet people who have CRAZY, and I mean crazy, stories and backgrounds.

With my best friends I’ve tried to mimic these niche similarities and find social outings where experiences aren’t necessarily shared, just an interest is. Here’s a few examples you should try:

  • Sofar Sounds: This is an intimate concert company. for around $26 you will purchase one ticket to a concert that only around 20-50 people will attend. You will know the neighborhood until the day of (then they’ll give you the address) and you won’t know the artists. I’ve gone to one every 6 weeks or so and have found a ton of new musicians I listen too daily now. Every friend I’ve brought along with me love the experience and is always itching to do another one. Breaking Sound is a company that does something similar.

  • Rage and Release: Run Clubs!! Or just movement clubs in general I recommend. Rage and Release specifically is filled with visionaries, entrepreneurs, artists, thinkers… some of the most interesting group of people I’ve been surrounded by. Our one commonality is a Saturday morning jog (R&R also hosts other events). I started going on my own, then bringing a friend or two… now the friends are asking me when the next one is! People are always looking for community, whether they know or not.

  • Dinner/Drinks Parties: I once read in a book (specifically in Never Eat Alone) that themed parties are always a win. I would agree… although I also love hosting. I’ll put out a cute little invite for people to come to a random bar or my apartment saying “End of Summer Drinks and Hummus! I’ll bring all the hummus, you bring your drink of choice!” Low costs for me, I am in control of who is invited and I will group together new people. Everyone can come and go as they please, and I can make it as much or as little work for myself as possible!… plus who knows, as all of our careers mature this is a great place to start building partnerships with and between new people.

  • Farmers Markets: Every Friday my dog and I venture to Union Square to drop off our compost. Throughout the weeks of routine in doing so we have now a regularly scheduled interaction with the compost man and Macie getting her treats (she sure loves a good treat), we grab our lettuce from the same man and our favorite Iced tea before going home. This is a small dosage of human interaction, but our brief conversations are enjoyable. My favorite part is later when I’m walking elsewhere and run into vendors or other regulars I know familiar faces and have a connection with people I otherwise wouldn’t.

Other notable activities that I just didn’t write about in full:

  • Art Gallery Openings: Y’all should go follow my good friend Grace and see what she’s up too.

Grace Mandl, myself and Macie at Grace’s Van Der Plas Gallery instillation opening night!

  • Walks or a Rollerblading Sesh: I love the East or West side highways, walking over the Williamsburg or Brooklyn Bridge, through Central Park or if in BK Prospect Park loops are lovely!

  • Singles Meetings: A good friend of mine just started going to these, he says they’re super fun, let me know if you check them out!

  • Sports Games: Let’s Go Knicks!

If you have other events and activities that you love to do, let me know and we will share!
