New Year's Resolutions are for Babies

When I played college basketball - my coach would sit us down after a game and tell us moments for improvement. He would deliberate on communication, my missed layups (whoops), moving the ball... and emphasize what we did well.

Next day we would get on the floor and work on drills specific to what he preached yesterday. I, usually, sat under the hoop doing mikan drills. We would walk through his critics and then usually end that portion of practice reviewing good points and clarifying what we already did well.

He has these chats with us every single day. And would immediately make changes to our routines.

He wasn't waiting for the next game, or next season to adjust.

Thats my point.

Did you notice something about yourself in November that you wanted to work on? Starting a new routine on 11/1 allowed you to work for 2 extra months (16% of the year!!!) compared to waiting for 1/1. Sam Parr is someone I have been closely following, he talked briefly on why resolutions are for “little boys” (made me lol), in this podcast, around min 18:23.

In November I decided I wanted to be better at copy writing, since the day of this decision I have landed 2 freelance gigs and brought in an extra $3k. Imagine if I waited until the new year.

I like 1/1 as a reflecting point.

I will look at what I did or didn't accomplish, rank it and see whats important to roll over. This isn't the only time in the whole year I assess my goals and habits. I try to reset once a month, but there is a big reset every 3 months.

Here is how I break down habit making and goal setting. I also linked how some of my favorite people set up theirs.

Timelines to Access:

I look at each category for each time period. Closer time periods have more quantitative and actionable goals, father out times are more like pictures I’ve painted for myself.

Example:

1 Month Goals:

  • Health: Be able to run 6 miles in X amount of time, cut out all added sugars and add 15g more a day of protein into my diet.

  • Wealth: Stop buying coffee during the week, save an extra $100, donate $50 to charities.

VS.

2 Year Goals:

  • Health: Finish one full marathon and be running on a weekly basis. Build a great running community and following for run meet ups in NYC area.

  • Wealth: Move to Brooklyn in apt for $X,XXX a month, have a second stream of income that takes no more than ~10hr a week, have $XX,XXX saved up- start thinking about buying a rental condo.

This is just what works for me, maybe this NYE your resolution will to just stop waiting to change, just start today.

All of these people are self-made Millionaires... So I usually like to hear what they have to say.

Happy New Year- lets make 2023 a year of big impact!
